Introduction

I am a cultural leader specializing in international collaboration and trust-based grant-making, with deep roots in opera direction that inform every aspect of my philanthropic practice. My career bridges artistic excellence and strategic leadership, positioning me uniquely at the intersection of creativity and cultural development.

As Executive Director of the Prince Claus Fund and Chief Executive Officer of The Arts and Culture Trust, I have strengthened institutions that support artists and cultural practitioners worldwide. My approach to philanthropy is grounded in the lessons learned from directing over 50 opera productions: the importance of trust, the power of authentic voices, and the understanding that sustainable impact requires both vision and pragmatic execution.

Cultural Leadership & Grant-Making

In leadership positions such as Executive Director of the Prince Claus Fund and Chief Executive Officer of The Arts and Culture Trust, I have strengthened institutions at the intersection of the arts and society. My work focuses on trust-based funding, international cultural collaboration, and building sustainable organizational structures that empower cultural practitioners rather than burden them with bureaucracy.

I believe effective philanthropy requires the same principles that guide effective directing: creating space for creativity while providing clear vision and support, building long-term relationships rather than transactional cycles, and measuring impact through genuine transformation rather than rigid metrics.

Artistic Roots: Opera Direction

My foundation in opera direction—having staged over 50 productions internationally—provides the artistic credibility and practical wisdom that informs my philanthropic approach. As an opera singer and director, I learned to bring productions to life with creativity and excellence, ensuring that performances resonate with diverse audiences while maintaining the highest artistic standards.

Central to my vision is the understanding that music and singing is more than just beauty but meaningful. Directing taught me to trust artists, recognize authentic voices, manage creative tension, and balance vision with real-world constraints—lessons that translate directly to cultural leadership and grant-making.

Mentorship & Education

A core belief driving my work is the importance of preparing the next generation of singers and cultural leaders. I have designed and supported training programs and delivered performance and acting modules within opera studios, choral academies, and university departments, emphasising holistic development—nurturing not only vocal and technical excellence but also the broader artistic, professional, and personal skills needed to thrive in the opera world.

As a freelance director and lecturer since 2008, I have been engaged by prestigious institutions including Cape Town Opera, Tshwane University of Technology Vocal Art Department, and UKZN Opera Studio and Choral Academy. My teaching integrates vocal technique with dramatic interpretation and movement, preparing students for recitals, auditions, and professional performances.

At the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), I supervise Honours and Master's students in Cultural and Policy Management, guiding emerging researchers and knowledge creators in the cultural sector. This work bridges the gap between academic theory and professional practice, supporting the development of future cultural leaders.

As CEO and Artistic Director of Gauteng Opera Academy, I oversaw the administration of the training division, managing a team of 7+ lecturers and 10 trainees per year. I developed a comprehensive training academy that produced staged productions as part of examinations and initiated an internship program to complement formal training. My mentorship philosophy centers on holistic artist development, career planning, role preparation, and fostering both artistic and personal growth.
