Opera Direction
Over 60 productions spanning three decades, bringing operatic masterpieces to life with vision and artistry.
My approach to opera direction centers on collaborative artistry and deep trust in the creative process. Over 50 productions across three decades have taught me that the most resonant work emerges when every artist—from principal singers to chorus members to technical crew—feels empowered to contribute their authentic voice.
I bring a conductor's understanding of musical architecture combined with a director's eye for dramatic truth. This dual perspective allows me to create productions where musical integrity and theatrical vision reinforce rather than compete with each other. Whether staging Mozart's elegance, Verdi's passion, or contemporary works pushing boundaries, I focus on clarity of storytelling and emotional authenticity.
My rehearsal process emphasizes exploration over prescription. I create space for discovery, encouraging performers to bring their full artistic selves to the work while maintaining a clear directorial vision. This philosophy—rooted in Ubuntu principles of collective creativity—has shaped not only my artistic practice but also my approach to executive leadership in cultural institutions.

Critical Acclaim
"Marcus Desando has a sharp eye for anything that can be histrionically comical, but also for the subtleties of movement, body language and human interactions."
Paul Boekkooi
Opera Critic, IOL Entertainment
"Desando's direction captured the emotional strain that the characters are forced to suffer by having to stave off the inevitable."
